Abdul Sattar Al-Dahir first came to the United States to study Geophysics in the 1960s. Then, he was a founding local member of the Muslims Students Association and met his wife, Sr. Holly Al-Dahir in the Washington, DC masjid. They then returned to Iraq, before traveling to London so Abdul Sattar could complete his Masters Degree from Imperial College. Abdul Sattar moved with his family to the United States in 1978. He became an community founder of multiple religious and community centers. He participated in local collaborative efforts across mosques and centers and was among the first community members to integrate immigrant and US based community organizations. In the 1990’s, he established Gulf Medical Relief Fund, Inc and was granted a US Department of Treasury OFAC Number (IRQ-03033) to provide Humanitarian Relief in Iraq. He participated in humanitarian relief efforts in Iraq, Palestine and Pakistan. He passed away two weeks after his last humanitarian trip to Iraq on February 29, 2004, the 8th of Muharam, 1425.

A Life of Giving

  • Founding Religious and Community Centers

    Br. Abdul Sattar was a founding member of Masjid Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, with Dr. Mohamad Suleman and Dr. Abdul Hafiz Khan in Kenner, Louisiana. The masjid is now under the umbrella of the Jefferson Muslim Association. Br. Abdul Sattar was also instrumental in establishing and maintaining two other area masajid: Islamic Center of New Orleans and Uptown Masjid urRahma for the student communities of Tulane, Loyola and Xavier University.

  • Supporting the Incarcerated

    Br. Abdul Sattar and Sr. Holly routinely visited individuals in the Louisiana prison system. This husband and wife team were dedicated to successful re-entry programs via education since the 1980s. Sine then, the brothers carried on and establish the Louisiana chapter of the Muslim ReEntry initiative.

  • National Charitable Networks

    GMRF, Inc was a founding member of the Council or American Muslim Charities in August, 1997. Founding members included ICNA Relief. These organizations provided the foundational network of Muslim charitable giving in the United States.
